My ABST to the Navajo Nation is one that will not be forgotten. There is no simple way to share insights from this trip--it truly was extraordinary. To me, the most important taking from this experience was a story from Vanessa. She told us how one time, she was in Europe and was on a panel answering questions about the Navajo culture. Someone approached her and exclaimed that the Navajo people have a beautiful way of life; this person then proceeded to ask how he or she can be more like the Navajo people. Vanessa responded by referencing a vase of flowers in front of her. She told the person to look at the flowers. They are all growing, and one is not competing for the other's beauty. We are all unique, and we have to embrace our own beauty.
I thought this lesson was so important; we as people make a habit of envying others, when in reality we were made perfectly the way we are.
