End of Trip Reflection - Ally

Hi my name is Allyson Gates and I had the pleasure of getting to learn not only about the people I experienced this trip with, but also the Navajo culture. For me, my favorite experience was the service trip to Navajo Canyon. After nearly 4 hours of travel time we were in the deep parts of the Reservation and literally working in a canyon. Here, we were able to experience Navajo culture without the impact of modern day society and it was truly amazing seeing a place barely touched by man. Here, we were able to help out Rocky and Sara on their farm while learning what it meant to be a true Navajo. Someone who truly inspired me on this trip was a Navajo woman named Vanessa. This strong woman gave me insight on all of the beautiful stories behind Navajo culture. She also taught me that life isn't easy, but you are beautiful and you cannot let the bad spirits lead you in a bad direction. Hearing all of the beautiful stories the Navajo told me allowed me to become strong and powerful in my own body and I cannot thank them enough for helping me do this through their stories and their sweat lodge. I am beyond thankful to all who helped us during this trip and to those who allowed us to live among the Navajo. It was the most amazing experience of my life and I cannot wait to instill their teachings in my life.
